Preface

Tradition has it that one year in the life of a dog equals seven years in the life of a human. Most dogs live to be about twelve. If the lifespan of a human is 84, that means, in a lifetime, a person could sequentially own seven dogs. So to mark the stages of my life, I will divide my existence into seven ages of Jerilynn: the lives of seven dogs I have known and loved. Now please do not expect this tale to be just about dogs. Mostly I’m using this device as an excuse to tell some of the stories my brain has collected over nearly seventy years. My ex-students will recognize many of these yarns. My family groans every time they have to suffer through another retelling. New friends laugh while old friends mouth the words as I fall into the familiar rhythms. Are they true? Mostly. Exaggerated? Frequently. Engaging? You, dear reader, will be the judge of that.
